Help[Opinions] Barnaby
I think we have decided on John Phineas or Phineas John for this little bean that should be arriving in the next month. I have fallen hard and fast for Barnaby though and would love some thoughts on the name. To me it is kind of geeky chic with an air of refinement to it as well- kind of like Rufus without the dog association. I worry that it has no nickname but with our daughter Scarlett, that is actually what I like most about her name. Which sibset do you like best?

Oh Barnaby or even Barnabas would get my vote for sure! Not a fan of Phineas at all really. I also think Scarlett and Barnaby or Scarlett and Barnabas sounds so much better than Scarlett and Phineas. Barney is always a possible nn, but really, the name doesn't have to have a nn. Rufus I love too by the way! Barnaby John sounds great.

We obviously have very similar taste as I have a Finn (Finlay) middle name George AND a Barnaby - middle name John!
I'm not keen on the ee-ous sound of Phineas. I'd much prefer Finlay or Finlo (Manx name). So it's Barnaby for me. Mine goes by Barney which I equally love.

I'm in Canada- I can't believe you have a Finn and a Barnaby!!! I can't stop saying Barnaby and love the way it sounds but am a little worried about a real child actually carrying it off- Thoughts?

I always think of "Barnaby Jones", the television series, and some little kid on Rugrats that Angelica kept telling about how bad things kept on happening to him (such as getting eaten by the monster under his bed).

I used to have - not an obsession - but a strong love for this name. I fell in love with it after reading Susan Cooper's "The Dark Is Rising" sequence of books. There's a young character named Barnaby (or Barnabas? It's been a while since I read the book! But I like both variations) with the nn Barney, and he's just so lovable it made me like the name!
The only problem I can see with it now is it's association with Barney the dinosaur... however, that seems to be slowly disappearing (is that show even still on), especially since there's the character Barney on How I Met Your Mother.
Anyway, I think it's perfectly acceptable and really very handsome.
Scarlett and Barnaby, imo, is a much better combo than Scarlett and Phineas... but I really dislike Phineas so perhaps I'm biased! I think it's quite pompous :P

Personally, I have always had a soft spot for Phineas, and I think Scarlett and Phineas make a great sibset. That said, I can see the appeal of Barnaby, though I'd worry about the potential for the "Barney" nickname. While I'd chose Phineas personally, either option is a good name, and I'd just go with what you love.

Think Bush's dog named Barny. Barny is a common nickname for Barnaby personally it reminds of dogs and old sailors with leathery brown skin and think Jersey's bringing the catch of the day in South West England... Phineas is a much better name.

Definitely prefer Scarlett and Phineas, and prefer Phineas John as it flows much better. Scarlett and Phineas both seem classic names. I also like the nickname Phin/Finn.
I really don't care for Barnaby, it sounds kind of 'bumbling' and clumsy to me for some reason. I also can't get over the bear association. The only nickname I can think of is Barney!
