I can't say I like Frederick at all. I do think that if you establish Rick as a nickname early on, it could work.
Fred is the most obvious nn for Frederick, but Vicky is the most obvious nickname for Victoria. My daughter's name is Victoria, but I established Torrie as the nickname early on, and she never had a problem being called Vicky. So I think that Rick as nickname for Frederick could be done.
On the other hand, I don't hate Vicky, I just preferred Torrie. I don't think you should use a name if you absolutely hate its most obvious nickname, because despite everything, it's possible your child will be called by that nickname. So if you hate Fred, I don't think you should use Frederick.
