[Opinions] Esperanza and an awfully contrived nickname
I have been really liking Esperanza lately, and I was trying to think of nicknames last night, and came up with Nancy.
Does it work? I am quite excited, because I have been looking for ages for a way to work Nancy in to things.
Also, would it be really optimistic of me to assume that Esperance is legitimate?
Constanza----> Constance
Esperanza----> Esperance
I'm just thinking Esperance nn Nancy is quite a lot less contrived, and it sounds a bit nicer too.
Anyway, thoughts?
TIA!

I don't know if anybody answered this but Esperance is legit.
Here are the stats on it in France:

I think Esperanza nn Nancy is fantastic
Really, it is. And I also believe that Esperanza need not be changed to Esperance. As a whole I'm not positively wild about either name, but in this instance I love them! Thumbs up to the moon!

Agree with everything.
Omg legit whatev. The etymology is legit.
I think Nancy is great for it. It's a neat name.

Espérance does mean "Hope" in French and is used (albeit very, very rarely) as a variant of Esperanza. It is more commonly used as a soccer club/company/organisation type name like English speakers may use words like Quality, Freedom or other positive words that don't carry the same name associations as Hope or Constance.
Of course, not many people in the US would make that association. You may get some confused looks if you live in a city with a large Hispanic community because of the spelling, since Esperanza is a way more common name.
As far as I know Nancy is not a common nickname for Esperanza/ance; Espie or Esper being the usual ones. But, hey, it's your kid and you can nickname her Butterball Turkey if you want ;)

Goodness, maybe this post should have been in the facts board :D
I'm not in the US, and don't know many Hispanic people either, so it doesn't really matter.
Hehe, Butterball Turkey is cute too!
Thank you so much!

I love Esperanza. Nancy is cute and I can see it as a nn for Esperanza. Then again, I can see Boogaboo as a nn for Esperanza too, so I may not have the same disciplined approach to nns that you do.
I just did a google search and Esperance is a town in Australia. But it's not a word in French, unless i'm really, really rusty. The French word for hope is "espoir," not "esperance." (If I'm wrong on that someone please correct me.)
Traditionally, Nancy is a nn for Anne / Nan. Did you consider those options (Anna, Hannah, Nan, Anzia, etc.) Other thoughts: Frances / Francisca, Susanne / Suzanne, Anastasia / Nastya?
Not that you asked, but I adore Constanza. :-)

I have considered Anne, Anna, Hannah, and they are family names for me so would probably be a logical choice :P But Esperanza/ Esperance is really tickling my fancy lately. I actually really like all of those suggestions as well.
I like Constanza quite a lot as well :D

ETA: It seems that espoir is for the physical and esperance, the metaphysical, according to this particular link: http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=681568
But it's not well-used outside religious contexts, if my French hasn't gotten too rusty. :)

We do tend to say esperance as much as espoir in my area, but we're an odd little corner of the French-speaking world.
Nancy is a name for a grumpy middle-aged woman.
Yeah, Esperance is legit. It's proper French and archaic English; according to the Oxford English Dictionary, it used to be used as a battle cry. It's a favourite of mine--Clare Esperance is my own Esperance combo.
Needless to say, I really like it. But Nancy feels too contrived for my tastes. I really like Espi, personally; I know an Esperanza "Espi," and it fits her really well. I think Nancy holds up perfectly well on its own.
