[Opinions] Basil
A couple questions:1. How do you instinctively pronounce this name? 2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live?3. Do you like it?

Basil is my uncle's name, and he pronounces it BAY-zil. I've heard it pronounced BAZ-ill, but that sounds rather strange to me. It's ok, but I find it a little stuffy of a name.

- BAZ-il.2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live?
- Yes I've heard it said in different ways, but here in Australia it's BAZ-il. I've heard Americans say BAY-zil.3. Do you like it?
- I do actually! It's quite cute.

Both the name and the herb is BAH-zil to me. I've only ever heard BAY-zil since coming to this board from the North Americans2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live?
Only BAH-zil is used.3. Do you like it?
On a boy I love it. It's not a girl's name at all.

I say BAZ-uhl. My husband says BAY-zuhl.2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live?
Yes, I've heard it pronounced two ways. Not entirely certain, but I think BAY-zul is probably the most common in my area.3. Do you like it?
Yes, I like Basil.

1. I'd pronounce it BAYZ-ul.2. The other ways I've heard it pronounced are BAHZ-ul and Bah-SEEL.3. It's okay, but not a personal favorite. As a Three Stooges fan, I can't help but think of the famous "Cousin Basil" scene in Brideless Groom when I hear the name.

1. How do you instinctively pronounce this name? In my head I say BAY-sil, because of the spice. But when I say it out loud I say BA-sil.2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live? I've only ever heard the name pronounced BA-sil.3. Do you like it? I'd love to meet a little Basil. :) I don't like it enough to consider using it myself, though.

1. BAZ-əl, if it's in a name context. If I just see the word sitting there, I'd say BAYZ-əl, like the herb.2. I've never heard the name pronounced like the herb, except by people who weren't familiar with the name, but I've never met anyone named Basil. I've only heard it on movie and television characters.3. Yes, I think it's a cool name. Kind of like Miles. They have the same sort of feel for me. Hmm.

I do. It's a nice name.

1. Bay-zul
2. Baz-ul, Bays-sil
3. It's alright, not my favorite name in the world, but it's alright. I think it's more of a boy's name than a girl's name, though.

1. How do you instinctively pronounce this name? BAY-zul like the spice because that's what I think of no matter what.2. Have you heard it pronounced more than one way, and if so, is one more common than the other where you live? The way I say it is common where I love but in UK they say BAZ-ul.3. Do you like it? LOVE it for either gender.
