[Opinions] Tzeitel
Dot reminded me in her reply to the Cordelia question about the name Tzeitel. I've never seen / read / otherwise taken in Fiddler On The Roof, so I didn't know of this name until I saw one of those huge families on TLC who had a daughter named Tzeitel. I pronounce it somewhat like TZYE-tl. The second syllable doesn't have a schwa in it; it's more like the end of 'little.' The first syllable I pronounce to rhyme with sky.I don't think I'd ever use Tzeitel, since I don't have any Yiddish heritage and it's a very Yiddish name, but what do you think of it?

Love itLove the meaning, and love the sound. I have a strong preference towards Z sounds. I really like it, but would never be able to use it. My husband would be sure to say it's "too Jewish". He nixed Chava, and has acquiesced to Hava, though in reality, I'm sure he'd only allow Eve.You should make a point to see Fiddler. One of my favorite musicals, and just love it in general. Great music!

Ick. That's a name from the shtetlach of Poland and Ukraine. It sounds too superstitious, not to mention it's a name from Fiddler on the Roof.

While I like Tzeitel and really appreciate its cool quirkiness (lol), I confess the first thing I think of is 'recital.'BTW, my dh loves FOTR! I suppose it's because we have all dds. ;-)

It sounds so strange out of its environment.
There is a pretty Yiddish name that I think could work in general society - Shaindel or (as I prefer) Shayndel. It's a form of Shaina or Shayna, and means "beautiful".

I LOVE that name.I think it's strong and beautiful and wholesome. It's absolutely wnoderful. And I kind of have the same dilemma as you - I fell in love with Mayim, but I don't have any Hebrew or Jewish relation either. It's going into my top combos anyway, though, as a first name. I don't think it matters that much! If you love it, you love it.

Oh... love...I wish I could use this name. Really. I love Tzeitel (I pronounce it the same way you do). Do you think a mn position would be okay for it?

Sure, I think so. Middle names are the sort of spot you can stick a very ethnic name that has no connection to your ethnicity :P But no, seriously, I think it would work with the right first name.
