[Opinions] Leigh is a place name
in reply to a message by Llewella
Leigh is a place in northern England (now part of Greater Manchester. I think the surname would have come from the place name. According to Wikipedia: The name Leigh probably derives from the Old English lea, meaning a woodland clearing or meadow,[2] or the Middle English legh.
Not sure why it has become the main female spelling of the name these days. Edited to say: Possibly the popularity of Vivien Leigh has influenced it as a girl's name?
