[Opinions] Noa
What does everyone think of Noa for a girl? I'm really not digging it, but everyone seems to love this name. If you are one of these people, please explain the appeal to me.

It's nice souding, but much too common for me.
I still think of it as a boys' name and it seems naked/incomplete without the h
I don't like the spelling, its just... uh... I hate it! lol. I dont like Noah/Noa on a girl full stop.
I've never been overly into it, it's too close to Noah which i don't really like. However, just seeing this post made me think of it in a different way. In Maori, noa is the ability to reduce, neutralise, or convert tapu (tapu is 'closeness to creation' along a continuum of creation-reality-creation. Tapu things are variously regarded as sacred, dangerous, polluted or restricted. The word tapu (present in many Polynesian languages) is where the word 'taboo' comes from. Some things that are tapu are newborn babies, the dead (both crossing boundaries between reality and creation), and uncooked food). Anyway, women are one of the primary agents for noa (child-birthing women convert tapu to noa during childbirth, other women perform roles in conversion ceremonies).
I don't whether I've explained this very well, but I now like Noa a lot more, in the context of Maori culture anyway.

Wow
Awesome, I never knew that! My knowledge of tapu has always been something along the lines of "Don't sit on the table it's tapu"
I'm going to think about that heaps now, thanks!
And btw, I sent you a PM.

Lol yeah I had to drag out my first year uni notes for a lot of that. Noa's definitely going on my list now though!
If it weren't for the boy's name Noah, I'd actually like Noa for a girl. The sound is very pretty.
But the number of traditionally boy names being used on girls and never returning to the boy column makes me itch when I see Noa for a girl. Name nerds could tell the difference, but the general public couldn't. On balance, I have to vote a reluctant "no" on Noa.
Nola, on the other hand, is very fetching for a girl. Could I interenst you in Nola / Finola?

I don't particularly like it, I tend to prefer longer names , but Noa is not a boys name used for girls, it is a legit feminine name
mentioned in the bible.
mentioned in the bible.
I love it. I like how it was used on a girl in the bible, not because I'm religious but because it has some history. I also like the sound of it. It sounds strong yet feminine. It's easy to pronounce in English, French and German. I always thought it was a much better name for a girl than a boy even though I also like Noah on a boy. The "a" ending just makes it more suitable for a girl. But yeah, I'm from a country where most girls names end in "a" so maybe that's why. I actually also like Noah on a girl.
Did you know that Noa is the number 1 girls name in Israel ?

I don't love it, but I like it. It's short and sweet and soft and fresh. I like the sound of it. It's close to Nora, which I love, and Nola, which I also like.
Oh my god when i saw this i was like please, not for a girl!!!

Ehm
Noa is a girl's name! It was used in the bible. In the bible there's a Noah (male) and a Noa (female). It is number one for girls in Israel. It's not a "boys names on girls" thing as with Ashley or Logan, it actually is a girl's name!
