I usually stray from any name that strikes me as religious. I realize this name is not, and I think it's very pretty. But I couldn't use it without thinking of the scary Evangelist preachers on TV screaming and shouting at you to send them money!

The first time I heard this name was in high school from an OLD song, I think from the 70's or 80's. It was a classic rock song, and all I remember about the song is the chorus: "Evangeline, Eeeevvvvaaaaneline - think I waaaaant you."My first impression was a little too elaborate sounding, and too many religious overtones. I still think it is too long, and I don't always like names ending in "LEEN." It doesn't seem as religious anymore because it is growing in popularity the last I checked. It's still not a favorite of mine. I like some long names because they have cute nicknames that don't hold up on their own, but Eve and Eva hold up as full names to me, and therefore it is unnecessary to lengthen them.

Evangeline by Matthew SweetGosh I feel old, the song you're talking about is Evangeline by Matthew Sweet. It was released in 1991. That song is the reason I like the name Evangeline. But I like the nickname Evan for it.

It's fine on someone else' child. It's a nice name, but not really my style.

I like it, but I would never use it myself.:)

I love it. It seems to be getting a bit popular, or at least it seem so here.

Like it as a mn, butIt's due to become very popular, very quickly. Which will, eventually, turn me right off of it. In fact, I'm already growing a teeny tiny little bit tired of it, and Jane Evangeline has been my perfect combo for some time now :(

I think it's lovely. I prefer Eve and Eva as they're simpler and less overtly religious, but Evangeline is nice too.Edit: spelling

♥♥♥I love it. I honestly think my love for it is definitely influenced by the associations I have with the name, rather than purely the name alone. I don't love it solely due to the sound or appearance or meaning, but a combination of that and outside influences.I must admit, I wasn't as crazy about it three days ago. But my partner and I absolutely love it now (I don't really know what changed; suddenly it just seemed like the perfect name!), and we've decided on the combo Evangeline Rachel for a wholly hypothetical, future daughter. :)Thumbs up!

I like it! I posted a thread about Evangeline maybe you can search for it to get more opinions. Enter "all messages" not just recent ones. I pr. it ee-VAN-je-line. it will become very popular, though. it is rising so quickly and i see it all the time on message boards and BAs.

oh and did you know...a little girl in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is named Evangeline "Eva" St Clare, she dies in the book.

Ugly...I know I am in the minority with this one, but I so cannot understand the appeal of Evangeline. The emphasis on the VANGE syllable is the part that gets me. It's a really ugly sound.Parts of it are nice. I like Eve, Eva, Angela, Angelina. Just not the full thing.

Me threeBut I like Eve, Eva, Angela...

Me tooSorry, but I really don't like it. I do understand the appeal of it, but it somehow sounds trashy to me. For me it's the "angel" part rather than the "vange" part. I just don't like the sound. Angel, Angelina, Angelica... but oddly I like Angela... hmm. I'm aparently insane.

I think it's lovely. I love most 'Ev-' names.

It's beautiful, but I would never use it for the same reason that LuzDeTuVida wouldn't. It comes across as religious, and I'm not. Its sound is so close to the word "evangelical", and Evangelical Christianity is not something I would ever want anyone to assume, from the name of my child, that I adhere to. Not that everyone who uses this name is an Evangelical Christian, I'm sure many if not most just like the sound of it. But it would make me uncomfortable.

I'm not a big fan of it, but I don't hate it either. At my work there's a little girl about 6 or 7 years old and her name is Evangeline. I must admit that she's helped me to like the name.

Love Evangeline. Very beautiful and spunky at the same time. That's rare.

Lovely name with great nns: Evie, Eve, Angie, Lina, etc. But I feel like I could never use it because it comes off as quite religious to me since Evangelism is a form of Christianity. I personally am not very religious.

It's becoming very popular. In the past two years it went from being unheard of to placing in the mid-400s on the top baby naming charts in the US. I went to a small high school in the middle of nowhere, and even I knew an Evangeline. Still, despite it's trendiness, and the fact that 20 years from now nobody will be naming their daughters that, it's still pretty sounding.
