[Facts] ELLERT
I'm looking for the meaning of the name "ELLERT". My 2nd-great uncle, born in Norway in the 1860s, was named Ellert, and while I've seen the name listed elsewhere, I can't find an etymological definition. What does ELLERT mean?

Hi Lars,Ellert is a Low German form of the Old German name Edelhart (older: Adalhard) which means "noble" + "hard, strong".Regards, Satu

Thanks, Satu. I did some more digging last night, and I found the name EILERT, which is a Scandinavian cognate of Eckhard, meaning "hard edge of a sword". Could this name be related?

Hej Lars,Yes, of course that's possible. Ellert could be related to Eilert as well. An older form of Eckhard is Egilhard so there the connection is easier to see.Regards, Satu
