[Opinions] Jack
Does it work on it's own, or should it be a NN for Jonathan? I love the name, but I'm indifferent about Jonathan, and I despise Jackson. So, what do you guys think?

I love the name Jack and I think it would work just fine on it's own. I had an uncle named Jack, not short for anything.
I think it could why not?
No, you're not.
There are plenty of people who loathe the name Jack. I myself happen to love it-I consider it just as timeless as John, only cooler-but I've encountered many, MANY people who despise the name. That's all well and good, because everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just curious as to why a simple name like Jack causes some people to foam at the mouth (not that you're one of them; I'm talking about the people I've met who say, "YUCK! I HATE that name!" right to my face). Not liking it is fine, but I've heard some downright venomous comments on this one. Which makes me want to use it even more. :)

I think it does work on its own. I mean sure it was originally a nickname for John but it doesn't sound nicknameish and works just fine on its own. Sasha and Lara are nicknames but they are not cutesy like Gracie or Fifi so just like Jack they work well on their own. Jackson is terrible by the way. I also prefer Jack over Jonathan.
It's perfectly fine on it's own.
I'd say it could possibly stand on its own.
However, I much prefer it as a nickname for John. Not Jonathan, just John. I've just never really like Jonathan that much, but lately I've been on a John kick. My top boy combo is actually a John combo right now.

I know a Jack. I think it's fine on its own.
I like it as a nickname for John, but not on its own.
I like Jack. Most people today probably don't even know it was a nn for John, so it definitely works on its own. It's madly popular where I live, and has been for a while, so I wouldn't use it though.
Hmm, I like the idea of Jonathan "Jack". It's sweet. I'm a fan of just John/Jack, but I know that John/Jack and Mary/Molly really annoy some people because they're the same length (one Molly got quite angry when I asked whether it was short for Mary).
But, yeah, I think Jack should be a nickname.
Other things it could work as a NN for:
Jacob
Johannes/Johann
Really, any John variant: Jean, Ioannes, Evan...but it gets to be a stretch.
Giacobbe
Giacomo

I think it's great, as a stand alone name.
I love it on its own.
I've seen bunches of BA's where the kid's fn is just "Jack" not short for something. My DH is named Jonathan nn Jack. I prefer Jonathan nn Jack. Jackson's ok but way popular.
I think it works
My Goddaughter's cousin (who is 6 or 7 months old now) is named Jack. I think it fits him quite nicely and works well as a full name.

On its own works best
definately not as a nn for Jonathan (that just doesn't make sense to me at all). It's really best without any other full name.

It was my first dog's name, and my cousin's name. I like it a lot, and it definitly can stand on its own.
