[Opinions] Matthias
An ex-boyfriend of my daughter's and his now girlfriend are expecting a boy and planning to name him Matthias. When I heard it, I thought it was nice. I hate Matthew, but what I hate about Matthew is the second syllable, and Matthias avoids that. On the other hand, a Matthias might be called Matt, and I'm sick to death of Matt, I've known quite a few, due to the popularity of Matthew. What do you think of Matthias?

I quite like it... of course, I also like Matthew and Mateo. (Matthew might be nicer if it were less common, but aside from that, I quite like it).

I love both Matthias and Matthew (I'm a bit biased because my SO is Matthew). I'm not a huge fan of the English pronunciation of Matthias, which is a bummer because I really like the name.

I really like Matthias better than Matthew. My sister's boyfriend is named Matthias and he gets called Matty.

I really love it. It's one of those few names that, even before I knew I was a name nerd, I've always loved (thanks to Matthias Ohlund playing for the Canucks :p)I don't like Matthew for the same reason as you. I think it's possible to maintain a full name with no nns. People think it's hard, but it really isn't. Both my brother I have no nns, and his is incredibly easy to shorten (Cristian = Cris, and mine could be Shay but I hate that.) And although Matthias has three syllables which might makes some people feel it's too long and want to shorten it, it's not like they're particularly difficult syllables. They pretty much roll off the tongue, and they're fun to say.Ok, now I'm babbling. I'll go :p

I like Matthias. Don't like Matthew or Matt but Matthias is very nice!

I love Matthias but I wouldn't use it because I hate the nn Matt. A second cousin of mine has a little boy named Mattias (MA-tye-as) and he gets called Ty which is kind of cute.

I really like Matthias. Like you I'm sick to death of Matt though.

I like Matthias, though I think I prefer it spelt with only one t.

I love it.
I discovered it in Brian Jacques' Redwall series (Mariel, Bryony, Martin and Luke as well, all of which I love) about seven or so years ago. I fully plan to use it myself, if I ever manage to grow up.
I can't think of another nn besides Matt. It would be nice to see something different, but there's really not too much you can do with it.

I like it. Definitely preferable to Matthew.
I can see a Matthias being a Mattie instead of a Matt too.
