Hmm, when I saw your subject line it was John Locke that I thought of. I'm a history student :) But I'll bet a lot of people haven't heard of him or wouldn't make the association, so it doesn't seem pretentious. (Not like naming your kid Voltaire.) I think it would be a great middle name more than a fn. Just because it's one syllable and they tend to flow so well..
