Help[Opinions] Jether
Have a new 6 yr. old student to check out whose name is Jether (like ether with a J)... His mum is Jpns. and his dad is not, I'm assuming... What are your thoughts? I think it's horrid, but then again I can't stand Ethan either.

In any case, it's a gross name and all I can think of is 1. Cousin Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies. 2. Jeepers Creepers.

But that can't be why they picked this name, since "Jether" is impronounceable in Japanese.

It may or may not be unpronounceable in Japanese but
that doesn't really enter into it. Only abbasdaughter can answer this question, I suppose, but given that she's posting from Japan (see her profile), it certainly seems to make sense that the abbreviation used meant Japanese. The OP says the child's father is not Japanese. Who knows how they pronounce it or why they picked it. I'm just saying "Jpns" must in this context mean Japanese.

I wasn't contesting that and I didn't know abbasdaughter was based in Japan.
Maybe I should have put my comment under the OP, which seemed possibly to imply that the name might be Japanese and that this kid wasn't in Japan. In the Facts Board I get the impression some people have rather odd ideas of Japanese pronounciation. Obviously all of this is not the case in this specific context.

I can't say it's a horrible name. I wouldn't use it, but it always depends on the family backround. And admitting that you don't like the name Ethan, which i think is adorable, that's not saying much. Is this kid caucasian? Or some other race? You never know, maybe his name means something to his family. Oh....and what did you mean by his mother's name???

Didn't say anything about his mother's name... Not sure of his father's background, but his mother is Jpns. and this definitely not a Jpns. name... and wasn't on the list of names in BTH... Newsflash: there are many cultures and ethnicities, but only one race- the human race. (just a linguistic pp of mine and it's not your fault since the word "race" is so widely misused)

I don't care for it. Though it might make an interesting name for a book or movie character, I don't think it works well for a real child. It looks like a mixture of Ethan + Peter + a J name.
On a side note, this reminds me of the time I met a boy named Josepher.

the boy's father's mn is Gideon and apparently in Judges, Gideon had a son named Jether, so it would be Hebrew origins... While I love Hebr. and some Hebr. names, this one still wouldn't make my list... Oh well... a friend of mine is thankful his parents couldn't agree on their original names for him and settled on Aaron (dad wanted to name him Gersham... makes me think of baby food).

Hey, that's quite interesting
mainly because I have a son named Gideon, and I suppose that puts me at slightly higher than normal risk of having a grandson named Jether. LOL!
Seriously, thank you for posting what you found out. So often we never do learn what the story was, and it's nice to know.

no prob... Personally, I think Jotham (Gideon's youngest son) was a better-sounding name than Jether (though I wouldn't use that one either)... and your son may choose to avoid that category all together... Who knows.
