It's beautiful, one of those underrated names. The meaning doesn't bother me, I agree with what Jacinta Ismene said on this matter.

I know wikipedia isn't generally the most trusted source for this sort of thing, but: "[Claudia] comes from a Roman family name which was derived from Latin claudus meaning 'nice, kind-hearted'."I always thought it was weird that a name taken by Roman emperors had such an unfortunate meaning, though a lot of Roman names weren't exactly of the flattering sort. Still, I don't think Claudia's meaning, whatever it is, makes it something that would be an infliction, considering the fact that probably less than 1% of non-namenerds have any idea what its meaning is.

I've read lame in multiple places, incl. http://www.behindthename.com/name/claudius and you're right about wiki not really being reliable.I think it's very important to consider what meaning one's putting upon one's child re: names, regardless of fame or popularity of a name... In many cultures, the name of a child represents what one is wishing/hoping for that child, in which case lame would be considered rather strange. I wouldn't wish that situation on anyone, so I wouldn't name a child that either.

Yeah, I know for sure that all the derived-from-Claudius names on here are defined as 'lame'...oh those Romans, I don't know what they were thinking when they came up with these names. I like your philosophy on considering name meaning, though I personally think that if a meaning is unfortunate but not obvious, especially if it has positive assosciations, I can overlook it. It's totally understandable that some people wouldn't be willing to be as liberal as I am about it, though.

I think some of these names derived from nicknames originally, that might explain it.

It isn't a personal favorite. But I'm all for reviving classics and Claudia would be a welcome addition to a kindergarten class.Sorry for any repeats:Claudia Helen
Claudia Frances
Claudia Magdalene
Claudia Bryony
Claudia Rachel
Claudia Margot
Claudia Germaine
Claudia Hilary I'll be interested to see what others came up with. I had a hard time. But good luck finding *the* perfect combo.

Every time I hear this name I can't help but think of the vampire and normally that's not too off putting (vampires are cool!) but Claudia was a bitch, actually she was past that, she was evil and spoiled and a brat. But apart from that its an okay name just not one I’d personally use. No offence intended to anyone with or who likes this name.

Its ok. I like Claudia Mae

I like it a lot but the meaning puts me off a bit. I've always loved Claudia Rose. It's pretty, even though it's a bit boring. I named a doll Claudia Margarethe.
