I like it. It features in the '60s Donovan song "Mellow Yellow" and has a sixties hippie culture feel, but I looked it up on Ancestry.dot com Censuses for England and Wales some time ago and found one or two from Victorian times. That must have been during the fad for flower names, saffron being from the stamens of a certain crocus. Since saffron was also the most precious of the spices, it also denotes "precious", and is also a colour name (what a gorgeous colour it is too!).
