David and Antonia were married in June 1926. Ten months later, they welcomed their first child, a son whom they named Loren. Two years after that, they became parents to beautiful twin girls, Vivienne and Georgiana. In 1929, David accepted a position as an overseas journalist, so he and his family relocated to Paris.
James and Cecilia had two more sons, Ezra and Jude. James was well on his way to becoming a partner in Cecilia's father's law firm by the time Jude was born. Four young boys in the house was certainly a handful, and Cecilia longed for a little girl, but James didn't want any more children.
Benjamin graduated early from Notre Dame in 1928 and immediately went back to France so that he could marry Eleonore. Once he got there, however, he found that she had already married someone else -- a wealthy French businessman twenty years her senior. Heartbroken, Benjamin returned to Boston and drowned his sorrows in the carefree lifestyle of the Roaring Twenties. Ironically, he met his future wife at a speakeasy. He and Ramona were engaged three months thereafter, but they were in no rush to tie the knot.
Lillian invested wholeheartedly in the flapper lifestyle, and this got her into trouble. She became pregnant by her boyfriend when she was only 17; by the time her daughter Eva was born, her boyfriend had taken off for New York with another girl. In 1928, when Eva was a year old, Lillian met and fell in love with Edmond Buford, the son of a successful doctor from South Carolina. After two years, Edmond proposed to Lillian and expressed his intent to adopt Eva after the wedding.
The stock market crash of 1929 hit everyone hard. The Northams' shipping business took a hit, but luckily Joseph hadn't done much speculating in the market. Still, the lack of buyers and customers significantly curtailed the standard of living that the Northams were used to.
