Honestly, I'd laugh if I met a kid named Wilfred. I'd wonder why his parents thought that was a good idea to use such a dated and wimpy name amidst a world of Ethans and Christophers. Not saying that every kid needs to be Ethan or Chris, but there is a middle ground between boring and ridiculous.

I place Wilfred in the "terminal" category with Melvin, Algernon, Norman, and Hiram. Just no.

Wilfred is fairly common in my area.

I like it a lot. It has great nicknames, I especially love Will. I think it would take a strong personality to carry it, just like it would take a strong personality to carry an old fashioned female name. I like Wilfred and Wilfrid the same.

My first reaction: are you kidding? Really? Wilfred? I'm sorry, but it sounds like a lacy sort of ornamental cabbage, just far too old-fashioned to be a decent name. Fred is an adorable nickname, also Will, but Wilfred is, well, not such a great name. My dad's name is Fred, so I associate this with both grandfathers and an uncle also (there are Freds on both sides, far back), but that's not an issue with you.

All I can think of is Wilford Brimley (He's famous for something, but I only know him from Liberty Mutual diabetes supply commercials). Even though the names are different they sound practically the same with my accent, and especially with his, so I find it almost comical. It's an alright name outside of that, and it could grow on me, as Alfred has. I prefer Wilfred to Wilfrid.

I'm on the fence about the name. I think I would prefer Wilfred between the two.
