It is now 1940. In 1937, Marie passed away peacefully in her sleep. The family was upset by her loss, but are glad that she and Jack are together once again. Marie never completely recovered from his death. Jonny and Angelina have still struggled a bit still, but they are still getting through. Rusty has decided to be a doctor. He is in his second year of school. He works very hard and pays his own way, since his parents don't have the extra income to support him. JW was upset when Rusty went to college, but he has now set his sights on becoming a doctor too. Jamie and Elise are doing well now. In 1936, business started picking back up for them, and their lifestyle is just about what it was before the Great Depression. Frannie, 15, is obsessed with boys. Elise worries about her, but doesn't want to interfere with her daughter's experience of life. Jay, Beth, and Carrie are on the rather mischevious side. Jay enjoys practical jokes, and often cons Carrie into carrying out the dirty work. Beth is more quiet about her deviance.Ben and Dorit have been busy building a life together. Ben's shipping business is doing great. He has since taken over for his uncle, and has managed to spread the business to three other cities, despite some rough economic times. Dorit is happy with Ben, and slowly, her children have come to adore Ben as well. Maya is seventeen now. She is dating a Jewish boy named Ishmael, and wants to convert back to the religion she grew up with. Dorit has decided not to encourage her daughter in either direction, but to let her make her own decision. Shaina is sixteen. She is concentrating on her schooling. She wants to become a "career woman". She hopes to go to medical school or law school someday. Shimon and Yakov are wonderful little boys. They adore Ben like their own father. The boys want to help Ben run the shipping business when they are older. In 1937, Rachel and Marie were finally able to save up enough money to move Rachel's family back to the farm. Sadly, Marie passed away a month and a half after they arrived back home. Rachel has since learned that David died in a train accident in 1934. She is quite busy with her younger children, and she helps Charlie take care of his twins as well. Dave enlisted in the US Navy the day after his 18th birthday. He is now serving aboard a ship sailing in African waters. Rachel worries a lot about him, especially with the Great War going on over in Europe. Walter is contemplating joining the Navy as well, but he thinks that he would rather open up a store. Rose really wants to work with children in impoverished areas, especially after seeing what the Depression did to her family and the people around her. Mike wants to play major league baseball, and Tom wants to be the captain of a ship. Helen, Alice, and Sylvie are enjoying a rather carefree childhood, after the way their siblings were raised. They like princesses and tea parties. Bobby and Dorothy are finally pulling their lives back together. Sarah, Maggie Joy, and Josie Anne are great girls. They are intelligent, graceful, and kind--rare qualities in girls these days.Charlie hasn't married, and doesn't think he ever will. His twins are getting older, and he enjoys having them around. Zach is very helpful on the farm, and Mary enjoys playing with Rachel's younger girls. Stephen and Betty still have not had any biological children. However, in 1936, they unofficially adopted two children who were wandering around without anyone to care for them. This gave Betty an idea. In 1939, the family moved to New York City and opened up a children's shelter there. Stephen and Betty live there, along with their two children, and they see to the needs of 19 children right now that they have found on the streets of the city. Lizzy got married in 1937. She met a travelling preacher who was going through the area, and they were married within 14 months. She and Daniel now live in Arkansas, where Daniel is a circuit preacher. Leah loves her new Daddy, and Lizzy is excited to be expecting another baby soon!Joey got married in 1939. His wife is the daughter of one of the shopkeepers that Joey frequents. A few months after their marriage, his wife had a baby. Joey won't say for sure, but many folks believe there was something extra going on before the wedding night.
