[Opinions] Dutch Family Names
Just thought I'd share some of the more "unusual" names in my family (I am Dutch, though I live in Canada).Girls:
Hannelore (Huhn-eh-LORE-eh)
Inge (ING-eh)
Rachel (RAH-ghel)
Hermanna (Her-MAHN-ah)
Hendrika (Hen-DREE-kah)
Okje (Ok-YE)Boys:
Johannes (Yo-HAWN-ess)
Wouter (WOHW-terr)
Bram (BRAHM)
Sam (Suhm)So... what do you think of them?
I personally love them, some of them are really different, at least in English-speaking countries.
Favourites? Least favourites?
:)

I like Sam best, and Okje least, but I pretty much dislike all female names ending in -je. I like Johannes as well, but it's a tad bit outdated...

Oh, Hendrika is wonderful. I've never heard of that before. It's going on my long list and I'll be suggesting it to others in the future. Thanks. :-)Hannelore is gorgeous. Love it. Inge is so cute. Rachel, Hermanna, Johannes and Bram all tickle my fancy too. Thanks again.

Birth Announcement!I just noticed a birth announcement lying around the house from some of our Dutch relatives. Translated, it reads:"Yay! We proudly present our son Loek, born October 8 2008. The proud parents are are Karin & Arno. He joins older brother Mirav."

What's the Dutch word for "Yay!"? I simply must know.

Loek. Is that a Dutch variant of Loic? If so, I like it very much. I assume it's pronounced, "LO-ek." Is that correct? Or is it more like Luke, "look."

It's the Dutch variant of Loek, pronounced the same as Luke.

Well almost :)It's shorter than Luke, it's LOOK, but said faster than the verb. I love Loek btw, very nice :)
