[Opinions] Noel
Which pronunciation of Noel do you prefer, NO-EL, or NOL? I prefer the smoother sounding NO-EL moreso. WDYT?

For a boy, Nol. For a girl, No-el (spelled Noelle).

Agreed re: pronunciation. It's a fairly decent name.

I love the French pronounciationNo-EL. But if I lived in USA, I might use the pronounciation "Nole". B/c people there seem frantic that a boy should have a name like a girl (Noelle). In Sweden, there is a 3rd pronounciation, NOO-el."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

I like Noel for a boy pronounced like NOLE. I wouldn't pronounce it No-El for a boy, because it would get mixed up with Noelle (sometimes also spelled Noel) for a girl, and it just 'sounds' feminine to me, anyway. :b

I prefer Noel pro. NO-el and actually don't mind this on a girl (which is odd considering my usual preference).
I have a character named Daisy Noel, but I considered nameing Harmony this if she was a boy: Sterling Noel.-Seda*

Seda: Has anyone seen the telephone?
Promise: *points to receiver* Maybe someone needs to find a way to attach it to this thing so it won't get lost.
Seda: *shakes head* Maybe we are becoming stupider with time.

I like Noel, with the English pron., on a girl too. Maybe it's cos I used to love Noel Streatfield's books when I was younger. Still prefer Noelle though :-)_____________________________________________________________________Elinor'Why do people with closed minds, always open their mouths?'

Like, No-elleI really do love this name, for a girl. But I prefer it spelled Noelle. I just don't like it for a boy.

It depends on any accent mark. Without any markings, I would pronounce it "NOLE," as in Noel Coward and assume it was a boy's name.If there are two dots over the "e," then I would pronounce it "no-ELL," as in "The First Noe"l" or the French word for Christmas. I would consider this to be a girl's name, the same way Summer, Autumn, Winter are. BTW, I intensely dislike the Noelle spelling.

But, do you think the pronunciation NO-EL on a boy would sound bad? In my opinion it has the same nice gentle flow of Noah in someways.

I love the sound. But everyone (here in the US) will assume it's a girl's name with that pronunciation. If that doesn't bother you, then fine.

For a boy--if you're saying it NO-uhl (or NOLE), I think it would be fine. But NO-ell or no-ELL for a boy would be confusing and probably evoke teasing. Unfortunately. ~Heather~
