I've started to like it (because a character in a book I'm reading has the name), but only pronounced ma-də-LEN or mad-LEN. The popularity is not preferable for me, but besides that, what do you think of it?

Aren't Madeleine and Madeline pron. the same?

I understand pron. it like MadLEN; I believe that's the french pronunciation. But in english, aren't Madeleine and Madeline pron. the same?

Yeah, they are pronounced the same in English. I just don't care for that pronunciation. I especially don't care for the emphasis being on Mad.

Madeleine "MAD-uh-lin"
Madeline "MAD-uh-line"

Really? It does make sense that they would be pronounced differently, but at least where I'm from they'd both be MAD-uh-line. That must not be true everywhere though! :)

I really like it, though I prefer Madeline (MAD-eh-line). Your pronunciation is lovely but would be very hard to enforce.

I like Madeleine, but I pronounced it "MAD-uh-lin". I prefer it to Magdalene, but I'd be tempted to choose that over Madeleine because of the popularity of "Mad-" names and for the bonus of the nn "Maggie".

Magdalene is gorgeous. In general I like Madeleine, Magdalene, and Magdalena (for the nn Lena).

I love it. I would love it as a fn, but I have so many other favorite fns that it usually ends up in the mn spot. I also like the spelling Madailein, but I'm not a fan of Madelyn or Madeline.

Oh! Madailein is very nice. For some reason I really like the Irish versions of many, many names.

Thank you for commenting! :) One of the reasons I don't like the MAD-ə-lin pronunciation is because it reminds me of Madeline, and I don't care for that spelling.

I like it. If parents like the NN Maddie/Maddy, they should go with Madeleine instead of Madison.

I agree completely. Even though I dislike the nn Maddie, at least Madeleine is a nice fall back name, and doesn't have the word son in it.

I love it :o). If I have a third daughter she'll probably have it as a mn. I prefer it pronounced ma-də-LEN. You're right about the popularity factor, I'd rather it wasn't so popular but I like it so much I don't really care. And I only like the Madeleine spelling. I can deal with Madaleine, but Madelyn makes my hair stand.

I like it pronounced the French way, which is muhd-LEN.

It's nice, but I'm not a fan of Maddie at all.

I'm not a fan of Maddie either, I think it's completely unappealing as a nn or a name. I think that I would never shorten Madeleine.

I much prefer Magdalene, I think it's much prettier and it just rolls right off the tongue. Madeleine is pretty though, much better than the trendy version Madelyn.

Magdalene is a gorgeous name too. I've never heard of Madelyn before. I always thought the trendy version was Madeline, and I dislike that enough as it is.
