Wilhelm and Alice are struggling to keep their farm. The depression has hit the whole Karlsson family hard but as long as they have the land and their animals at least they will be able to feed themselves. Wilhelm and Alice have also welcomed their first daughter, Gunilla and now have three children; Wilhelm, Gustav and Gunilla.
Johan and Mary are now the parents to three beautiful girls; Karolina, Elinor and Greta.
Karl and Kerstin live in the city with Victor and Hugo and the Great Depression has been devastating for Karl's work. It is no longer possible to find work as a carpenter. The family is seriously considering returning to the Karlsson family farm.
Sara and James have welcomed a son, Esaias and they gave him the middle name Lee to honour their first son who died in 1923. They now have two children: Lillian and Esaias. Despite the Great Depression they are doing quite well.
Nils has just married Emma, a girl from a Swedish immigrant family. They have decided not to have any children before the economy is better. They live with Nils's parents and work at their farm.
At the age of 16 Ingrid fell helplessly in love with a boy on a farm not far away and one thing led to another. 17 years old she gave birth to her daughter Lovisa Katarina. It brought shame on her family and she now lives a quite isolated life in the attic together with her little daughter.
The twins Oscar and Gustav now 18 years old still live with their parents and work at the farm. They are both engaged to two local girls but there won't be any weddings at the moment.
The adopted son Erik still longs for Sweden. He is convinced the economy is better there and he wants to meet his relatives if only to know why they never came for him when his mother died. He is still considering running away but feel like he can't abandon the Karlsson family.
Maria, 14 and Margareta 11 are living with their parents and try to help as much as they can.
