[Facts] Welf
I teach high school and one of my German exchange students is named Welf (which makes me assume it is German). Does anyone have any other information about it?

According to W.Seibicke, Historisches deutsches Vornamenbuch, WELF means "whelp, pup, cub." It was a traditional name among the House of Welf between the 11th and 20th century.
Nowadays WELF is extremely rare in Germany.
