It's a bit twee as a given name. I think it's ok as a nn but to me it's like naming your kid Treasure or Sausage or Darling. I used to know one woman called Petal but it's a nn. Her real name is either Kerry or Carrie - apparently she was one of a few with the same name at a new workplace and they nicknamed her Petal after the book she was reading, which I think was 'Petals on the Wind' by Virginia Andrews lol. It definitely stuck - everyone calls her Petal.
