I think Gwendolen is okay; I neither like it nor dislike it. As pleasant as it sounds, something about it is clumsy to me as well. I prefer it spelled Gwendolen. Gwendolyn was the only spelling I accepted for the longest time, but after learning the -lyn ending is not correct and letting that fact steep for a few years, I've come around to Gwendolen and anything else looks wrong. The same thing happened to me with Bronwen. :)
