I go by my first name - some of my oldest friends shorten it to Shiv/Shev occasionally, but I never think of myself as that.
My mother goes by her second name, Ita. She was Elizabeth for the first few years; then her mother decided that she didn't like Elizabeth because people were shortening it. Ironically my grandmother's first name was Ita but she went by Addie. My father went by a shortened version of his name always.
My ex-boss called his son after himself - James. However my boss went by Jimmy and him and his wife didn't like the way everyone called his son "Little Jimmy" so they began to use his second name Dillon.
