I love Thomas. It's the longest-standing male name on my list...a wonderful, timeless classic.
I have no idea how common/popular it is in my area. I don't hear it often...
I think you could avoid a nickname when he was little, but he might prefer to go by one when he gets older.
Amazingly, I don't think I know anyone named Thomas. (I do know a man whose given name is Tommy, though. He, of course, goes by Tom.)
