I suppose it could just about work but it's a bit odd. Roma might be a bit more "namey", but then you have the problem of it being the name of an ethnic group as well (the proper name for the gypsies).

I like it on a boy. I have a cousin named Jerome who goes by Rome (and family sometimes affectionately calls him Romy).

We will most likely use Rome as a middle name for our next child, regardless of gender, because it is the maiden name of one our grandmothers.
