DD: Elina Merit (April 21, 1913-April 26, 1934, age 21)Location: various places, USAIt is 1935.The Lindgren family weathered the Depression fairly well. They lost a lot of business and had to scale down their spending, but weren't tremendously affected overall. Erik and Ylva are getting older, and their son Johan and his family moved into the family house in 1933 to help maintain it. Karin and Taras are doing okay now. In 1931, they moved to New York City where Taras was promised a job. For four and a half months they lived in deplorable conditions and Taras was paid a pitiable salary. After those four months, Karin decided to take her children back home to her parents in Oregon while Taras looked around for a job. The elder Lindgren's were excited to see their oldest daughter's children for the first time. Karin and Taras' eldest daughter, Kata, contracted tuberculosis while living in the city. In 1934, she passed away at the age of 11. Further tests by doctors have determined that both Vira and Karin contracted tuberculosis as well; however, their cases are not active like Kata's was. Karin is currently in Philadelphia with Vita seeking treatment. Jonny was miraculously spared the disease, so he is currently living with Erik and Ylva. Karin has not heard from Taras since 1933, when he was traveling to Washington DC to get his piece of FDR's New Deal. She fears that he is dead. Rike and Matthew are doing well. They are thankful that all of their children are healthy and productive. Matthew lost his job in 1932, but worked on one of the local farms for a much reduced salary. Rike and the kids worked hard cultivating a vegetable garden, doing piecework, and various other jobs to try and bring in some extra money. The family has fared well. MJ (Matthew Junior) is glad that the economy seems to be turning around. He wants to be a scientist or an inventor, so he wants to go to college. Charlie wants to take up farming and has read lots of books on agriculture. Lizbeth is a little boy crazy right now, and every week declares a new crush. Jamie, Ben, Joey, and Mickey hang out together, most of the time. They are their own little gang of boys. They like running around the neighborhood, going fishing, and helping out around on the local farms. Helen is a huge help to Rike, and she especially likes to tend the vegetable garden. Andy and Minnie came through the Great Depression very well. Andy's business stayed strong throughout the Depression and has continued to grow. Andy and Minnie's daughter Dee was born in 1931, followed by another daughter, Sarah, last year. Minnie's son Sam is growing up quickly. He is a good big brother to the girls and is quite protective of them. Johan and Mary were married in 1931, and moved in with Erik and Ylva in 1933. Johan now has sole ownership of the furniture business, though Erik sometimes helps him out. They have had two children; a son in 1932 and a daughter in 1934. Jorgen has been living in Sweden since late in 1930. In 1934, the Lindgren's recieved news that he had married a Swedish woman named Hanne Lisbet. Hanne was a widow with three young children, whom Jorgen has since adopted as his own. Jorgen and Hanne are expecting their first child together.Sven graduated from medical school in 1931. He returned to Oregon to practice medicine. For a few years, he lived with Erik and Ylva until he earned enough money to buy a house of his own. He has not married and has no children; though he does have three dogs that he adores. Freja is now engaged to a young farmer in the area named Thomas Brooker. Thomas and Freja met at a local farmers market and hit it off immediately. Thomas is from Iowa, and moved to Oregon after a tornado devastated his family's farm. Freja and Thomas plan to be married later in the year. Kristin has had a rough five years. Her boyfriend, James Lawson, took advantage of her greatly. The two of them lived together for three and a half years, but James left once the Depression got rough. He left Kristin with two young children (and expecting a third) and no resources whatsoever. Kristin moved back in with Andy. Earlier this year, she was able to move into an apartment with her children. She lives near Andy, and he helps her out when she can. Elina moved to California the day after she turned 18. She found an apartment in the city on her own and worked in a seamstress' shop to support herself. She was 19 before she got her first singing job. Elina quickly became a star in Hollywood. Tragically, she was attacked and killed by robbers looking for cash five days after her 21st birthday. Erik and Ylva were grieved that their youngest was also the first to pass away, but they are learning to cope with the loss of their daughter and are busy raising their grandson Jonny while his father is missing and his mother and sister are in Philadelphia.
