Shortly after David's first birthday, Queen Philippa was with child again. The timing couldn't have been worse, as Umbresey was waging a brutal border war with its northern neighbor, the kingdom of Aldfair. King William was just preparing to leave and join his troops when he received news of the queen's pregnancy. He was torn between staying by his wife's side and his sense of duty, but in the end Philippa told him that he needed to be with his men. William departed with a heavy heart, hoping to end the conflict soon and return to his family.
Philippa's belly grew quickly, and she was convinced she was carrying twins. The court doctors, however, confidently told her it was just one child. At seven months, she went into labor prematurely. She delivered a healthy girl, Princess Isabel, and was about to rest when she felt another strong contraction coming on. The midwife was stunned: another baby! Princess Matilda was delivered only a few minutes later. Unlike her twin sister, she was noticeably smaller and weaker. Doctors are unsure whether she will survive to see her first birthday.
William returned only a few weeks later, having driven back the Aldfarians and reestablished the northern Umbresian border. He was absolutely delighted with his twin daughters, although secretly he had hoped to have another son.
To maintain peace with Aldfair, William quickly set about beginning preliminary negotiations for arranging a marriage between his eldest daughter, Princess Sofia, and the Crown Prince of Aldfair, Cathal. It will be many years before the wedding happens (Sofia is only ten years old; Cathal, just thirteen). But the negotiations themselves are enough to guarantee peace between the two realms for some time.
