I just saw this name over in the polls. Deacon is the name of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe's son. I LOVE IT!!! It's an AMAZING name. I'm heartbroken I could never use it (Spanish husband would not like... lol)! It's perfect, because it's cute when they're little, and refined when they're older :)
To whomever wanted to use this name... I say go for it!
What does everyone think about this name? I'm thinkig a LOT of y'all will say it's too trendy hehehe...

I really like the name Deacon!

Blech! As others have noted, this is a common role in many protestant churches (and Catholic, apparently). Not only is the sound really severe, but what if the person is not a Christian, and they are saddled with such an overtly religious name? This is like naming your kid Reverend, Pastor, Priest, Cardinal, Pope... It's just funny, to me, and way too presumptuous.
But for those of you who like it, there is also the feminine version, Deaconess!

I don't care for it. Seems easy to tease ("Geekin Deacon") and it's too much of a religious title imo.

I love the way it sounds but probably would never use it because of the church association. I know a character in some movie is named Deacon... I can't remember, maybe in Ferris Bueller?

When I see this, I assume it's lifted straight from Ms Witherspoon. That's why Ava has always irked me so much, and Deacon is going to be the same. A sudden, blatant imitation that sweeps the world. Lol.
However, unlike many, I'm not bothered by the church connotations. I just haven't been involved enough in any church to gather those associations, I suppose :-)

I don't like it at all--a deacon is not a name. It's a position in the Catholic Church. In my experience, deacons are like glorified altarboys; we only see them at Confirmation in my church, and then the one that comes always glares at the altarboys during the service.
Naming a child Deacon is like naming a child Archbishop or Priest or Pope or Rabbi. It's just not cool, in my book.

Priest Holmes
I'm a huge football dork, and an even bigger fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Priest Holmes is the name of an MVP on the team. (AWESOME player, but back to the subject!)
I don't really like "Priest" as a name, but for some reason it fits him... it's a once in a lifetime thing, ya know? I'm thinking a kid named "Deacon" would really have to be spectacular to pull the name of to it's fullest.
Sorry... the Arch-Bishop commentary made me think of Priest Holmes-- I'm SO random!

I love it. But, for religious reasons partly. We go to church and our church has Deacons. So, I always think of that, which is a good association for me.
I think it's super cute too! I love it. I'd use it in a second if DH didn't dislike it. It's his kind of name too... not sure why he doesn't like it.

I think it's a really nice name. It's not a favorite or anything and I'm not sure if I'd use it, but I still think it sounds nice.

Deacon...is very Southern to me. I'm not sure I like it. Deke would make a cool nn, however...:-)
