I don't really care for either, however, I'd go with Charles here because Charlie is such a cute nn and Carl sounds quite harsh.

Neither actually

I hate Charles (I think Prince Charles ruined it for me), but I love Charlie.

I find Carl harsh and abrupt, but I love Carlo or Karlo.

So all in all I'd have to say Carlo for me wins.

Or Karl, if I have that option, too.

Charles is growing on me, but I think I prefer how flexible Carl/Karl is; it can be regal or down-to-earth, whereas Charles just strikes me as the former.

I'd say it's probably because Charlie is cute on a baby/ kid and either Charles or Charlie works on a man.

I prefer Carl. I like how Charles allows for the nickname Charlie, but I'm not really a fan of it. I think it's an okay name though. I just like Charlie a lot better than Charles.

Wow I hate Carl. Someone said Charles was dated and ugly, that's the way I feel about Carl. It reminds me of hurl (slang for vomiting) and snarl. I can't see how Charles would ever be considered dated, it's been around for ever, I can't think of one decade it's dated to! Charles is a royal name that has been used by kings, from tons of different countries. Also, in the Middle Ages, Carl was used as a nickname for a villain, or a person of low birth and rude manners. Yuck.

Charles is amazingly handsome. It's classic, classy, and Charlie is just about the cutest nickname ever.

Carl is such a classic, regal name. I just like how it sounds. Compared to Carl Charles seems soft and bland.

Wow, if you don't mind me asking, but is Charles dated? To what decade?

If anything, Carl seems way more dated, whereas Charles has always seen constant use, in every country from royalty to common men, Carl basically came out of nowhere, peaked in the 1910's and then disappeared pretty fast!

Yes, and isn't Karl a royal name there? I think there were many kings named Karl (or a combo with it), so it hardly came out of nowhere.

though I prefer Karl. I like the simplicity and strength of it. Bonus is that it's a family name and I'm a fan of Karl Urban.

Charles. Carl is a variant and Charles is the root name; that's why I prefer Charles. Plus, it'a very handsome name with almost endless nn possibilities to fit the boy and the man (Chuck, Chucky, Charlie, Chock).

I don't like Charles anymore. I can't tell you why. I have no clue. Carl is calm, grounded, unpretentious, wise, approachable, ancient. I don't like to admit that my opinion is colored by good associations, but I do think I would like it better on its own.

Besides, whenever my taste will permit, I like to prefer less-fashionable things; Charles is kind of In, especially in England; Carl's out. That appeals to me. Call me hip.

I tend to prefer Charles too, but Carl is the actual family name my DH wants to honor and I'm not sure I can totally sway him. Perhaps it's time to revive Carl and give it another chance? I am interested in everyone's feedback.

Oh, if it's the actual family name, that gives it about fifty more points in my book. Direct honoring is so much better than indirect honoring, IMO.

I... definitely think it deserves a shot, if you can be swayed. :)
