My daughter is considering Saxon for the daughter she hopes to have some day. This theoretical girl's birth is still a few years off.

Not sure about the middle name, but my daughter says it will be ultrafeminine.

What do you think of Saxon for a girl? Too weird?

I don't care for it. It does sound cool, but there are a lot of things that sound cool that shouldn't be names. Why not Saskia? It means Saxon (and since it means Saxon, she could easily use it as a nickname), and at least to me is much more interesting. I also think it goes really well with her other children's names, which by the way are really awesome.

My husband says this would be like naming a daughter China Woman
or Welsh or Japanese, etc. I just find it strange and unattractive, as well as unfeminine.

It's not only weird, but not good. It's like being named Indian. Or Korean. Or Gaulish. Not to mention it makes me think of pillaging barbarians. Perhaps there is enough time to talk her out of it? :(

Oh, there's plenty of time. If, please the powers that be, I ever have a granddaughter, it won't be for three or four years' time. I hope Saxon has gone the way of the dinosaurs by then.

A Saxon to me is a pillaging invader! - or a cheesy heavy metal band from the 80s. So, um, not very girly.
However, if my cute granddaughter was called Saxon, I could probably be persuaded that it was cool. There are much worse names, and it's easy to spell and pronounce.

I find it odd, and at the same time trendoid with the x and -on ending, and not one bit feminine. So, sorry but it's thumbs-down from me.

Wasn't she considering Helena or Athena for girls? Those would be a billion times better than Saxon!

She was considering Helena or Athena at one point. She abandoned Athena as being too gimmicky, though. If Abraham had been a girl, the name settled upon at that time was Carys.

I do think it's weird to be honest. To me Saxon is a name for someone who belongs to the Germanic people who lived in Britain centuries ago. It's a bit like naming your daughter Aryan, Celt or Goth. And if I remember correctly I don't think it goes well with her other children's names (Leonidas and Abram?)
With that said, Saxon is not that terrible. The spelling and the pronunciation is pretty straight forward. It's quite masculine though.

Hmmmm... I don't know for a girl but I do like Saxon for a boy. It seems a little too out there but who knows how "common" it will be in the future.
