[Opinions] Sylvia
I've been pondering the name Sylvia lately. I've never met anyone with the name, though I realize it's not very unique. I like how gently old-fashioned and classical it is.What are your opinions on the name Sylvia? Can anyone think of any combos they would pair it with, in either the first or second spot? What might siblings of a Sylvia be called?

I love the sylvan meaning, and I've always had a close affinity with it because it's my own name. :) I'm Sylvia Anne (MN comes from my grandmothers, Ann & Anna). I've met other Sylvias, but very few my age. I think it will get more popular, but right now I enjoy having a less-than-common name.(If you want to know, I have 3 sisters named Victoria, Leandra, & Geneva. My brothers' names are mostly for honouring, so they are a different style.)

WowYou and your sisters have such gorgeous names! Like something out of a storybook. And it's nice to see that A Sylvia enjoys her name!

Thanks, and yes, I love the names too. I'm glad my parents have good taste. I just can't imagine being named Ashley or Jessica like half of the girls in my classes. I love family honouring, so I may use Sylvie Anne on a daughter someday. :)

Yeah I have no idea why it's more popularI've only ever met one person with this name, and I've always thought it's one of the most beautiful names out there. It reminds me of icicles. I don't understand why people view it as an old lady name. I've never seen it that way. It's just georgeous and it's way overdue to become popular. I think I'll reconsider it today. I have trouble imagining what a little Sylvia would look like, but I'd just love to see this name used more.

It's got a ways to go......but you may be right! Old lady chic is hot hot hot. Sylvia Beatrice is quite pretty. Thanks!

My mother thinks it is an "old lady" name. I like it, but I prefer Silvia or Silvie or maybe even Silvana. It makes me think of Sylvia Plath, a tragic figure in the worlds of poetry and feminism, but an interesting person nonetheless.

Sylvia PlathYes, I was trying to think of famous Sylvias, and she was the first one to come to mind. Actually the only one. She is a tragic figure, but I like the soulfulness that comes with the name association as well. Is that a bad thing? I don't know. I bet we all share a name with some unfortunate person or another :)I was not sure if I preferred Silvia over Sylvia, and after writing it out, I think I like the Syl- version. There is something a touch more dramatic about it. More Victorian, while Silvia seems somehow more modern. It definitely is an old-lady name :) I think it's in a bit of a limbo at the moment - not as hip as Alice or Charlotte yet, but also no longer considered "ugly". I bet it'll be next up for hipster revival, along with Maud and Ralph.

AlsoI've only ever met one Sylvia (Silvia, though, I think). She was Hispanic and in my first grade class, meaning she's 22 now. Her brother's name was Fernando.

I love the name Sylvia. It's #4 on DH's and my list of names for future daughters, so it probably won't get used in our family, but I love it a lot. My favorite combo is Sylvia Margaret. I think Sylvia works well in combination with other old-fashioned names that are a little more down-to earth (Katherine, Caroline, Rachel, Helen, Penelope)Siblings for Sylvia would have to be other classic or old-fashioned names. If I had a daughter named Sylvia, her siblings might be named Margaret "Maggie", Elspeth, Julia, Ezra, Asher, or Jonas.

Sylvia Chloe - I actually quite like this!Sylvia Genevieve - ohh, very romantic and flowy.Sylvia Ruby - I love how this really ups the jazz-age appeal of Sylvia
Sylvia Pearl - So beautiful, I love it!
Charlotte Sylvia - I like how the more subdued Charlotte gives Sylvia an almost Gothic air here. It's my favourite of the Sylvia-in-the-middle combos.I like the suggestions of Pearl, Mabel and Annabel for sisters and Clifton and George for brothers. Thank you!
