This is my little sisters name and it gets really irritating when people pronounce it Marlen-A. It's Marlen-E, like the first e in ever.
For that reason, I can't really see Marla as a nn.
My sister goes by Marly or Maly at school.
I think her name is nice enough, but she doesn't seem to like it. She says it's only got a stupid meaning and it sounds harsh (she's 14, I should add...).
Don't want to put you off it, just some first hand experience. :-)
