In the Kingdom of Forestmere
Amazingly, the fiery plague seemed to wind down after the birth of Undine and Kamala. It went from striking 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 in that month. The next month, it was down to 1 in 200 people. Six months later, it was only striking every 1 in 500 people, when King Jasper became sick.
The whole family, the whole Kingdom, was in a panic. Everybody was so focused on King Jasper that no one noticed that the little Princess Reny was quietly limping around or lying on cushions near her father. At the end of the first week, the King was still breathing. In fact, he was doing better then most who had only been sick for only two days.
It was then that Queen Rosabla was called away because a stranger who said he was a priest wished to speak with her. Snapping, Queen Rosabla demanded to know why she was disturbed with this when her husband was sick. The servant replied that it was the same little hunchback that told her what to name the twins. Gasping in surprise, Queen Rosabla caught her husband's eyes and then moved off to follow the servant.
King Jasper was then alone for the first time the whole week. Sighing, he swung his legs over the side of the bed, determined to get one last glimpse outside before he was too weak to do so. On weak legs, he slowly trudged to the bay window. Ready to collapse, he looked down and saw that the little Princess Reny was curled up in a corner. Sliding to a seat on the other side, King Jasper reached out to move a strand of Reny's hair back. As his fingers slid across her forehead, he felt fire under his touch.
With tears streaming down his face, he scooped his daughter into his arms. She opened her eyes and smiled at her father, squirmed just slightly, and settled into the crook of his arm. It was then that the Queen and the little hunchbacked priest walked in.
Not seeing her husband in bed, Queen Rosabla stifled a scream as her eyes roamed the room. She found her husband and daughter almost immediately, and noticed that the little priest was already heading that way. Upon reaching the King, the little priest held his hands near, but not touching, the two. Sighing, the priest sadly told the two parents that their little girl would not see the sun rise. King Jasper was nodding when Queen Rosabla let out a scream.
Surprised, the King looked to his Queen to see fear, panic, desperation, and helplessness on his Queen face. The little priest went to one of the servants outside the door, and calmly asked for water for tea. He then opened a little knapsack and took out little bags. Sorting some of the bags into one of three little piles, he returned the rest to his knapsack.
By the time the water had arrived, the Queen had managed to stop screaming. Opening each small bag, the little priest pinched a small amount of herbs into three of the cups and then poured hot water on top.
Taking the first cup, he gave it to Queen Rosabla. Startled, she asked what it was. The little priest replied that it contained herbs to sooth the stomach and calm the mind, but nothing to dim the senses. Satisfied, Queen Rosabla took a small sip and then sighed in pleasure.
The little priest had already gathered the last two cups and was handing one to King Jasper. Arching his eyebrow slightly, the King didn't raise his hand to take the cup. Smiling slightly and shaking his head, the little priest told the King that the the mixture was similar to his wifes, but with mild pain relievers that would do nothing to dull the senses. Looking between the cup and his daughter, the King sighed. The little priest then told King Jasper that he would take the girl and help her with her tea, which contained sweet leaves and a stronger pain reliever. Nodding, the King took his tea while the little priest shifted the princess to his arms on the other side of the bay window and helped her sip her tea.
After the tea was done, the little priest shifted the princess back into the King's arms and started to leave. Gasping, the Queen ran after the little priest and asked why he was leaving. With sad eyes, the little priest said that there was nothing more he could do. Color drained from the Queens face as she whispered "what do you mean?". Grasping one of Queen Rosabla's hands in both of his, the little priest told her that her daughter would be gone with the sun and her husband had three more nights.
Queen Rosabla wanted to fall to the floor in a heap, she wanted to cry and scream and just break down completely, she wanted to heave objects around the room, she wanted to throw up, but found herself frozen in place unable to move or even take a breath. And then the little priest squeezed her hand and she breathed.
"You must be with your daughter and comfort her," the little priest told the Queen. "You must help your husband settle his mind and prepare to leave this earth. And then you must help your children deal with their losses. You are needed, don't ever forget that." With that, the little priest let go of her hand and walked out the door.
Rushing to her husband's side, Queen Rosabla stroked her daughter's hair and talked quietly to her until the sun rose and her breathing stopped. The King never let go of his little princess. When the breathing had stopped, the King sadly ordered her body burned, like all of the bodies of the fiery plague had been, and the her ashes gathered and placed in the family crypt.
The next few days were hectic as Queen Rosabla helped her husband jot down notes and make his few last proclamations. The very last Kingly command was his decision to abdicate to his son, Prince Nico. This allowed Prince Nico to be crowned King Nicolaus just before his father passed away.
On the last night, the Jasper was too weak to even move his head to look around. Queen Mother Rosabla and King Nico were there at his bed, and they saw his last breath. Sighing, the Queen Mother ordered the same for her husband as he had ordered for their daughter. The fiery plague only took three more victims after the King - and all were convicts.
The Kingdom was in morning, and very afraid. They had lost their king, and now had a child King. The Queen Mother and the former King's Chief Adviser were now co-regents. Each had an equal vote, with King Nico having the third vote. It would remain this way until the King's 17th birthday, when he would then rule independent of regents.
It was quickly decided that the former King's wishes of having his son chose a wife was indeed a wise thought. The court put out feelers at a few neighboring kingdoms. When the Sultan of Prylyn contacted them with an offer for his youngest daughter, everybody was shocked.
The Queen mother voted to say no to the offer as she had heard that the child was spoiled with a hot temper. However, the Chief Adviser and King Nico both saw the good in the offer and voted to accept.
Thus it was the the young King Nico became engaged to Shula, the youngest Sultana of Prylyn. While Prylyn custom would allow Shula to marry at 13, Forestmere custom wouldn't allow her to marry until she reached her 16th birthday. This suited the Sultan, who would get to keep his daughter at home another 3 years.
The long engagement was began. Shula would visit the court little until she turned 13. After her 13th birthday, she would spend half the months in Forestmere and half in her home of Prylyn.
King Nico was deeply saddened with the loss of his father, sister, and childhood. However, he was determined to do right by the Kingdom. He became a very introspective child, and read histories whenever his duties gave him a slight break. The Queen Mother mourned for his lost childhood as much as she did for husband and daughter.
Life was slowly creeping back toward normalcy...
