[Opinions] Agnes
I am curious to know what is the general perception, positive or negative, of the name Agnes on this message board, and combos if any, regardless of which pronunciation.Personally, I find the name to be rather cute, and it reminds me of the word cygnet. The only combos I seem to like are Agnes Matilda and Agnes Theodora.

Negative.I think it's the way the "gn" looks and sounds. I don't like it at all. It sticks in my throat.Agatha is way positive, though.

Positive definitely! This was the name of my great-grandmother's sister, who died very young. Because it's a classic name, and a family name, I like it. Though personally I prefer the name Agatha, I'd love to see this used too.
What about Agnes Marie, Agnes Therese, or Agnes Theodosia?

negative - mDon't like the "ag" sound. Too similar to words like hag and gag.

This all depends on your pronounciation. ;)

NegativeThis name is to me, for lack of a more elaborate explanation, a total ugmo. I just think it's crotchety and cranky sounding.

Definitely positive. I love this name.Nothing to see here, nothing at all.

PositiveWhile I prefer Agatha, I like Agnes as well. I like how it sounds like agnus, which means lamb in Latin.

Neither, really. I don't think it is an attractive name, but I don't despise it. The image it brings to mind is that of an angry nun smacking kids' hands with a ruler.

Positive for me!I delight in the name's almost archaic grace.

Positive.I love Agnes with a longer middle name. Agnes Theodora is adorable! I also Like Agnes Francesca and almost any three or four-syllabled name ending in 'a' in the middle name spot.I would seriously consider using this name on a child if my surname didn't also begin with an 'a' and end with an 's' - it's a bit too much!

PositiveI love it, but it is one of those names that took me a long while to warm up to. I love your combos.

I love Agnes and I plan on using it on a future daughter. Agnes or one of its variants. As much as I love the name for itself, it's also a name honouring a very dear family member. All the more reason to use it. Moreover, old(-fashioned) names in general are experiencing a huge revival in my country so she probably won't stick out in a "negative" way.I do find it hard to come up with good combos, though.
I've been thinking about Agnes Feodora. Or else Agnes Leontine - but the lamb and the lion reunited in one and the same combo might be a bit too much. So I don't know, yet.

negative. to the hundreth degree.any name with the syllable -ag, especially those that start with Ag, are harsh and horrendous sounding to me.

I used to dislike but within the past year or so, it's grown on me. Agnes Theodora is lovely.Other possibilities:Agnes Clementine
Agnes Cordelia

Agnes Helene
Agnes Lucinda
Agnes Minerva
Agnes Ophelia
Agnes Octavia
Agnes Philomena
Agnes Rowena
Agnes Rosetta
Agnes Seraphina

Positive. But I like it loads more written than said aloud, and I hate the NN Aggie. I think it looks cute and kind of soft, actually.

Hmmm, negative if I have to choose. But I'm more neutral on it, really. Don't like it, don't hate it.

Ditto.

My association used to be negative, but I've recently become more or less neutral on Agnes. I like the nickname "Nesta".I don't personally have any combos for Agnes, but I do think that Agnes Theodora is really charming.

PositiveI like it. Agnes Matilda is lovely.

I really don't like Agnes at all. I think the sound is very harsh and unattractive and the whole name is kind of abrupt. I do love the nn Aggie though. I think I prefer Agatha as a full name for Aggie but I am not really overly keen on any name that could possibly lead to Aggie as a nn :-(

HUGE Negative--But I like NN Aggie

Agree... Agatha gets a positive, though.d

PositiveI've been loving it lately. Your combos are great, very classic.

My first association with the name Agnes is a young third-century virgin martyr; she is always pictured with a lamb because of her purity. That's definitely positive!Even though I do like it, it does have a harsh sound with the g and n against each other. It should probably be paired with a softer name. Agnes Eleanora?

PositiveAnd I also love Matilda and Theodora. Both combos are fantastic.

NegativeI think it's pretty dated and sounds kinda snobby. Agnes Matilda is nice, if Agnes had to be a first name. I think Matilda makes Agnes sound a little 'younger'.

I love Agnes. I have a positive perception of it. It seems very strong and intelligent, and I just love the nn Aggie. I don't have any combos that I totally love. My default Agnes combo is Agnes Fionnuala, but not sure if I like that anymore. Your combos don't really feel right to me either, although Agnes Theodora is pretty awesome. Very stately.

It's a nice name, old-ladyish but in a good way. I'd love to meet a little Agnes.

I quite like Agnes. My grandmother's name is Agnes Vivien but she goes by her middle name.

It was my paternal grandmother's name. When I was pregnant, I was discussing names for a possible girl with my mother-in-law, and the possibility of names used to honor family members. She asked me what my grandmother's name was, and when I said, "Agnes", she said, "Oh, noooo!" in a horrified tone. This kind of bothered me.But it bothered me in the sense of "I can criticize a family member, you can't" and "I can beat up my little brother, but you'd better not!" because, actually, I have to admit, I find Agnes incredibly ugly.

Positive!!I love Agnes, and I hate the reputation it has for being a stuffy, old lady name. I find it rather handsome and elegant, but youthful and spunky at the same time. The world could use with a few more babies named Agnes! One I've come up with is Agnes Elizabeth Jane. I also like Agnes Jane Ophelia, and Agnes Elizabeth Mary. Since Agnes isn't that popular, I've found that you can stick it with common, but old-fashioned, names and create a lovely combo. With Agnes as a middle name, I like Sarah Agnes / Sarah Agnes Ophelia, and Emily Agnes. Agnes Matilda and Agnes Theodora are darling names...I love them.
