[Opinions] Roxanne

Roxanne has an odd reputation in my family as being something of a "lost" name. My grandmother tried to use this name twice - once for her much younger sister, and then for her daughter, but was never able to convince anyone to let her. My aunt who was to be Roxanne uses it as a kind of pet name in the family. I really like this name, but every time I bring it up, it gets bad reviews - especially by my mother, who starts bawling out Sting's "Roxanne" in the charming style of Roseanne Barr's National Anthem. So, what's the verdict on here - Roxanne, yea or nay??

It's pretty, but I prefer Roxana / Roxanna. At a preschool I worked at a few years ago there was a little girl called Roxina. That was kind of cute, too.

Gives a rather sentimental impression, like the heroine of a cheap love story. Rosanne is close enough, and better.

Hmm, I disagree. I find Rosanne to be the more tawdry of the two. Perhaps it is because oh my Roseanne Barr associations. I like Rose very well, but Rosanne is not my cup of tea. thank you though!

I've always liked the name, but the Sting song association does put me off! How about Roxanna instead? Still very similar, but not Roxanne.

A couple of people have mentioned this alternative, and it really is growing on me! Sounds a tad more refined, which I admit I do like! :)

I prefer Roxana. It reminds me of Alexander the Great's Tajik wife.Roxanne really does remind me of that song... it would be pretty hard to get away from that, I think!

I like it...(M)I never used to like it...but it is cute. I think Roxie is due for a comeback. I really like Roxana the best myself. I say yea!

Nay. There's really nothing *wrong* with it, but it has a bad reputation thanks to the Police song. All I think of is a jaded prostitute.

I've known two Roxanne's and they always get that song sung to them, but Roxie is a cute nickname. Which they're both called.

I prefer the spelling Roxane (one n), and I have a cousin named Roxane (chosen because it is a Persian name and we have Persian roots). Now as an adult, she chooses to spell it Roxanne (two n's) which annoys me beyond measure.I think Roxana is the most beautiful form, however.

Roxana is very beautiful as well. And maybe a Roxana would avoid that awful song!
