[Opinions] Melissa.
My name is Melissa and people have always shortened it to Mel, which I don't like and never had but it's probably the most obvious nickname. I'd rather people called me by my full name.
What other nicknames could you use for Melissa?
Would Mia work?
It would be weird if I just started referring to myself by a different nickname, how could you subtly 'bring it in'?

Lissa, or Lissie, or Lis; or Mimi. Mia could be made to work if you really loved it, but not unless!
How often do you 'refer to yourself' by a nickname anyway? Seems an odd thing to do. If you subtly bring it in, I very much doubt whether anyone would even notice.
Your best bet would be to tell your friends and family that you no longer feel like a Mel so would they please try to get used to calling you Melissa.

I grew up with a lot of Melissa's. As children many went by Missy. But I find that very undignified, like some generic term for girl. For exmample, "Listen here, missy." or "Hey missy." It sort of sounds like a gender specific "Hey you." Most of the Melissa's I know as adults, just go by Melissa, and don't use any nickname at all.
I didn't even realize Mel was a popular nickname for Melissa. I thought of Mel as more of a nickname for Melonie.

This is my name and her are all the nns I can remember I've ever had:
Meliss
Mel
Mel P.
Melpy
Melps
Melpsalina
Melou
Melly
I realize 3 of those are from a combo of first and last name. And for a story based on me, the character was Melina. Since Melissa means Honey Bee I kind of like Miela for a daughter meaning honey-sweet, my mom's name Deborah means Bee so I like the generational connection.

My mom's name is Deborah too! How weird.
My best friend is Melisa (one s) and I've always called her Missy. Cheesy I know but she IS a Missy lol. Another Melissa (2 s's this time) I've befriended I've always called Mo. She just is for me :)
Mia could work as well as Lisa, Lissa or even Lissy.
