[Opinions] Esther
Someone posted a message about old-lady-names like Edith and Eloise and it reminded me of my love of Esther.
One of my favorite names is Esther, and I've talked about how much I like this name openly many times, and every time have been given faces of disgust and comments of disapproval. I really just don't get it at all. Is something wrong with Esther? I just don't see it as old-ladyish, maybe because I've never met anyone named Esther. The only association I have is the character from Meet Me In Saint Louis. I've always thought it sounded like "A star"
Thoughts?
Any good Esther combos in mind?
I've always been drawn to Esther Rose.

I love the name Esther! I forgot there was an Esther in "Meet Me In St. Louis", I like that movie. Couldn't ever use the name though, as we have a niece with this name. She's about 16 months old and just gorgeous. Her name is Esther Adelle, mn after great grandma.
I love Esther. I think it's very pretty. The only Esther I've ever met is the daughter of a missionary couple from my church - she's probably about 7 or 8 now.
Esther Rose is nice. An old favorite of mine used to be Esther Maeve.

I like Esther. I think it has a lovely, light sound without being frilly. My only problem with it (not a big one!) is that it sounds exactly like "ester" -- as in biochemistry.
The only Esthers I can remember having met are a young Ethiopian girl, a 30-something Mexican American, and an old Anglo American woman.

Maybe you think it sounds like a star because it means "Star"! I love the name Esther and would def. use it. Although the Orphan movie put me off a bit.
I like it. It sounds a little like "Easter", but that isn't a big deal.
People probably dislike it because, well, it IS an old lady name. The only Esther I knew was in her 60's. It really doesn't matter what people think, though.
Possible combos:
Esther Aveline

Esther doesn't seem particularly old-ladyish to me. I don't really like it, but it sounds very timeless. I know an Ester probably in her late-20s. And I have a friend named Maia Esther, although I don't think middle names really count.
For that matter, Edith and Eloise aren't old-ladyish to me either. They both sound cute and fresh and upbeat to me. Especially since I know a baby Eloise.

I know one Esther: Esther Maria, and she's a grandmother.
It's always sounded vaguely medical to me or at least scientific: all those jokes about the research chemist's twins, Polly and Esther. It's very much nicer than Hester, but not as good as Stella. For non-joke twins, using Esther and Stella as mns would be a nice, subtle link.
Have you read 'Scallagrigg"? (William Horwood) If I remember, the central character was Esther or had it as one of her names. Good book.

I like Esther a lot, the only bad association is that it sounds like esters in chemistry, but I'm such a geek that's not a very bad association for me.

Funny, I actually planned on asking pretty much the same questions on Esther later today. :-)
I have a huge crush on this name at the moment. I never thought it would happen but it did ;-)
I don't see Esther as too old-ladyish as I know two women my age (mid-20s) named this. And even if it was an "old-lady-name" - I tend to love those anyway; I love Mabel and Enid as well.
Hmmm, it's probably different in English-speaking countries but I know that a lot of people around here are put off of this name because of the chemical association, Esther - even "worse" yet Ester - and ester sound and look the same to them... Plus, they think this name has too harsh a ring to it, it's not "girly" enough. I used to think the same, but now, all of a sudden, I find this quality very attractive. Like dark chocolate.
Anyways, I really, really like this name and if I were to use it, I would probably pair it with a family name of mine. Something like Esther Miriam, Esther Dorothea or Esther Lydia

Oh, I love Esther. Great meaning, great story behind it, and the potential nn Essie is adorable. Wether you are religious or not, the biblical Estehr is a pretty neat role model (stood up for what she believed in, risked her own life to save the rest of the Jews). If it wasn't my grandma's name, I'd use it as a first name, as it is I plan to use it as a middle name, partly after her and partly cause I just love it so much. So two thumbs up here.
I don't like Esther Rose. The Rs run together too much.

I used to really hate it, but its quickly turning into a love. I used to think of it as really old lady, until I started following this 20 something's style blog. Her name is Esther and shes very rockstar and very pretty. She completely changed the image of the name for me.
Esther Rose is very pretty!

Pooh, how can people say Esther is disgusting? It is incredibly pretty, it's full of sharp, sparkling sounds. I would not use it myself but I would be beyond delighted to meet a little Esther. It does indeed have a starlike clarity to it. There is not a thing wrong with it.
Because I admire Esther but think it's not for me, I've not played around with combos, but I might pair it like:
Esther Daisy
Esther Viola
Esther Charlotte
Esther Gisele
Esther Claudia
Esther Minerva
Esther Lydia
Esther Octavia
Esther Ophelia
Esther Lucinda
Esther Lucy
Esther Penelope
Esther Rosaline
Esther Sylvia
Esther Zelda
