I don't know that the meaning is widely known enough for anyone to think to make fun of a plain looking Freya. It's a beautiful name. Personally, I prefer Freyja.

Freyja was my former English teacher's name
She was a Canadian of Scandinavian descent, and had only met one other with the name (that person having been named after her).
