[Opinions] asking about meanings
I find that if you are in person with someone, there's nothing wrong with politely asking where they got such an interesting, attractive name (I always say how pretty or wonderfully creative their name is, even if it's a lie, becausee people are more inclined to share if you refrain from being judgemental). I might not do it over the phone, unless you really are burning with curiosity. But it's perfectly acceptable, to me, to ask about a name's origins - politely, politely- because people with such names I am sure get asked that all the time, much more rudely.Plus I am just like Janice - I NEED to know why that name was chosen and what it means! Name nosey :)

hahaha
I guess the times I am less likely are when the owner of the name is not from this country. I don't want to make them feel as if I think thier name is a novelty, or that I am just being ethnically incorrect or something....
