You should ask in the surname board, but the US census records are informative. It seems to be a German surname, at least one person was born in `Hesse Darmstadt' and another was born in `Germany'.
I do not know what the surname means, but there seem to be quite a few families with this last name, mainly in TX and NY, and some people with that surname seem to frequent genealogy sites: you may contact some of them to see what you can find out.
