I'm thinking Biruk may be a variant of the Hebrew Baruch meaning blessed. I haven't found anything to the contrary, but I also can't say for certain that it is.

The following site, which seems to be a bit more reliable than a purely "baby names" site, says that Gebre Yesus means "granted by Jesus" in the Tigrinya language:http://www.everyculture.com/wc/Costa-Rica-to-Georgia/Tigray.htmlAnd this site promoting adoption of Ethiopian children says that Asrat is an Amharic name meaning "my gift to God" or "gift to the church":http://tesfaalliance.org/names.php

hi Kate,I don't know about the last two, but Gebreyesus seems like it has the words Hebrew and Jesus in it.. which doesn't seem that far-fetched when you know where Ethiopia is on the map.
