I originally thought it was short for the French name Aimon -- which is also a phonetic form of Eamon / Eamonn. Aim sounds incomplete to me, so I'd want to pronounce it ah-EEM as if it were Arabic in origin.
BTW, I like the nickname Ames for Amy/Aimon/Eamon.
