[Surname] Franz as Russian?
Can this be a Russian name? I heard it on a Russian guy...We're all in the gutter, but some of us look at the stars.

Franz (or Frants)is not listed on the website, but Frank and Frantsev are. Frank is described as a Bielorussian Catholic surname from the Germanic frank, meaning "free". Frantsev would also derive from the forename Frank.
Perhaps your Franz had a shortened version of Frantsev, though there's always a chance that he was a Russian of German ancestry.
