As the eldest Lemaître daughter, Chantal takes over her father's bakery, and runs it well--she had inherited her mother's business sense and pragmatism and her father's soft-spoken kindness. She keeps the bakery small and intimate, preferring the specific knowledge of her regulars' tastes and the close personal relationships she made than the huge conglomerate that her cousin Pascal had made out of her mother's family's watch shop. As a teenager working in the bakery, she meets and falls in love with a young Parisian student, one of the masterminds of the 1968 riots. His passion and nerve inspires her, and her even-tempered nature keeps him from really going off the deep end. They get married in their mid-twenties and Chantal's husband goes to school to get his PhD. Two days after her 27th birthday, Chantal gets into a horrible accident--she is hit by a robber's getaway car, which was in hot pursuit from the police, when she was crossing the street. She pulls through, but her recovery is long and arduous. Her hip and pelvis are permanently damaged--she walks with a slight limp for the rest of her life--but the worst part was that she was now completely unable to have children. Devestated, Chantal throws herself back into managing the bakery, but luck strikes one day when one of her regulars confides in her that her teenage daughter has become pregnant and she wanted to give the baby up for adoption. Chantal tells the woman that she and her husband were looking to adopt a baby, and a few months later, the woman's daughter gives birth to a boy. Chantal and her husband are overjoyed to have a child, and promise to give him everything he could ever want.
