[Opinions] Evan on a girl
On another site that I visit, someone said that they have a new niece named Evan. IMO Evan is strictly masculine and I have no idea why someone would use it on a girl

It's okay.

I like it. In my eyes, Evan is unisex. It should be paired with a more feminine middle name, though, just to balance it out.

Evan's one of my least favorite names, either gender, it's so boring and absent of everything. It's like Ryan. It's not even a name. It actively bores me. I would rather someone not have a name than be named Evan or Ryan.People think it's good for a girl because it sounds soft; for example, it sounds like Evelyn contracted.

I think it's okay. There are worst male names for girls. Evan can kind of sound feminine. Kind of.

I think it sounds extremely feminine so I see why people would use it on a girl. It reminds me of names like Eva (which is pronounced EH-va, like Evan without the n, in some countries) and also of names like Eve, Evie and Evangeline.I know two girls named Evan. I think it fits a girl better, especially with the nn Evvie or Evvy.I think the same about Kyle and Ryan. They sound very soft.Still I think they're all fine on boys, too.

Evan is alright for a girl, but I'd probably spell it Eavan since that actually is a female Irish name. Most famous usage I know is the poet Eavan Boland.

I agree. It's terrible on a girl.

I love Evan for a girl, but only as a nickname for Evangeline. I don't mind tomboyish nicknames, as long as a girl has a more feminine full name to fall back on.

Evanthe or Evangeline nn Evan, would have been more appropriate. I do love Evan, but only for a boy!

I don't like it on a girl. It seems a little too masculine, but I do like some boy names for girls, i.e. Ryan, Bailey, Jordan, but not Evan.

me either....

Totally agree. And I do hope this trend proves ... evanescent ...

I knew a girl named Evan, she spelled it Evin though. It fit her fine. I used to think Evan was strictly a Jewish name. I've actually never met an Evan who's not Jewish, including the girl.

I would say that as a nickname it's cute, but for a full name it is a bit too boyish. I know a woman named Evan...

I wouldn't do it, but then again it's not the worst boy-name-on-girl name I've heard. If they had to use a unisex name, they could have at least used Jordan. That one's pretty much widely used on both genders. Evan is practically strictly male.

It's a nice name for a boy, but I really dislike it for a girl. Evanna would have been prettier.

I think it should stay a masculine name as well, although I can see why some would choose it for a girl. It has a gentle sound to it.

I think it could work as a nickname for Evangeline, and must admit that I love long, feminine names that have short/boyish nicknames (i.e. Alexandra nn Alex). I wouldn't use Evan as the given name, but like it just fine as a nickname.
