I was at school with a Caroline whose nn was Cal; she would have been about 12 at that time. She left the school, and her nn was inherited by a Carolyn who'd been in the same class. I don't know what happened to Caroline, but Carolyn has retained her Cal to this day, which is more than 40 years down the line.

It makes the same kind of sense that Molly does as a nn for Mary ... though Carrie is more usual I suppose.
