Book: Pride and Prejudice
DH: Fitzwilliam Arthur Darcy (33)
DW: Elizabeth Cassandra Darcy (26)
DD: Susanna Mary “Zanna” (5)
DD: Olivia Jane (2)
DS: Adam Charles (nb)
Zanna was so excited when she found out she was going to have another little brother or sister, Elizabeth thought it would be a good idea to let her choose the name. Mr. Darcy agreed, but suggested they give her a list to pick from so the name would be appropriate. Zanna could already read with a little help, and when her parents presented her with a list of names from Shakespeare, she chose Adam, from the loyal old servant in As You Like It, for a boy and Rosalind, after the heroine of the same play, for a girl. Mr. and Mrs. Darcy agreed to give the baby the middle name Charles, after Mr. Bingley, if it was a boy, and Georgiana after Mr. Darcy's sister if it was a girl.
Elizabeth thought that the baby was due in August, so when she went into labor on a hot July day everyone was stunned and worried. It was a very inconvenient time, too, for Pemberley was full of guests! The Bingleys, Elizabeth's friend Charlotte, Elizabeth's aunt and uncle, Georgiana and her husband, and Kitty were all there, not to mention all of the children between them! It was utter chaos when she went into labor. But Jane quietly took charge. She gathered the children together--Zanna, Olivia, Emma, her own Henry and Margaret, Charlotte's John and newborn Katherine, and her aunt and uncle's two daughters and two sons--and set Kitty, Charlotte, and Georgiana to looking after them, sent her uncle to fetch the doctor, and got Georgiana's husband and her own to sit with Mr. Darcy to keep him calm. She and her aunt helped Elizabeth until the doctor arrived. In the midst of Elizabeth's labor, Lydia arrived to visit Emma. It was certainly a hectic day! But at the end of it there was Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's first son, Adam Charles. He looks just like his father, and everyone is delighted with him, especially Zanna, Olivia, Emma, and Mr. Darcy. He is perfectly healthy and slmost full term, says the doctor. All agree Elizabeth must have miscalculated by a few weeks.
